MORRISTOWN, N.J. — Since Hurricane Maria devastated Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, Louis Berger has deployed more than 300 staff and independent contractors on the ground in support of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), U.S. Postal Service (USPS) and Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) missions to bring much needed manpower, equipment and supplies to the islands’ more than 3.4 million residents. Over the Columbus Day weekend, the company shipped an additional 200 commercial power generators from the Port of Jacksonville set for Puerto Rico.

Louis Berger has deployed manpower, equipment and supplies to Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands - St. Thomas, St. Croix and St. John - in support of the U.S. government's mission to restore power and provide other relief to the hurricane-impacted islands.

“Our people are working around the clock to support the emergency recovery needs today – to restore power and provide other relief to the hurricane-impacted islands,” said Tom Lewis, U.S. division president at Louis Berger.

Louis Berger has a long track record supporting communities in their recovery and rebuilding efforts following major disasters, including in the Philippines, American Samoa and in New York and New Jersey following Superstorm Sandy to restore and rebuild better power, water, structures and transportation systems that are more resilient to future storms.

“The road to recovery can be long, and Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands can rebuild its infrastructure to be stronger, more modern, more sustainable and more resilient with the US government’s assistance,” said Lewis. “Given the pre-existing challenges that the islands already faced, public-private partnerships and the commercial sector in general also can be leveraged and play a key role in the long-term recovery as they can provide additional solutions that government alone would not be able to provide.”

In addition to its work with government clients, Louis Berger is already working with multiple private equity, insurance and power system suppliers on solutions to offer more large scale, modern, sustainable and resilient power solutions for the islands and businesses there, including cleaner natural gas, solar, battery storage and microgrid technologies.
